Marine mammals are aquatic animals which fall into these four categories; cetaceans which include dolphins, whales and porpoises; marine fissipeds where the polar bears and sea otters are found; the sirenians which include manatees and dugongs and the carnivorous pinnipeds which consist of seals, sea lions and walruses.
They are all mammals despite living in the water and as such, share the same traits as the land mammals. These include breathing air through their lungs, being warm-blooded as well as having the ability to bear young. Despite all living in the sea, some of them are obligate water dwellers, while others are semi-aquatic and spend time in both the water and going on land for specific activities. Their diets also vary between species and can include anything from zooplankton and shellfish to fish and other mammals.
Although there is still much to learn about the ocean and the creatures which live there, scientists, researchers and veterinarians believe that they have a fair enough understanding of these animals to educate the world.
Which of the thousands of marine mammals are you? Are you playful and curious as a dolphin? Are you as charming as a sea lion? Are you as reliable as a walrus, or will you be the peaceful whale? If you would like to find out which of these it is, then you should take this quiz!
