Long before body piercing came to "the West," many cultures and tribes used this form of body modification not only for beautification and to identify social classes but also to symbolize maturity and accomplishments. Some of the earliest types of piercings date back to 1500 B.C., where nose piercings were found in mummified remains, while others like nipple piercings go back all the way to 320 C.E. in Ancient India.
When piercings debuted in American households, there was a certain stigma attached to the modification, but since the ending of the Second World War, its popularity increased and by 1990, it became mainstream. Today, apart from being used for spiritual purposes, piercings are seen as a form of self-expression, while others use them for sexual pleasure and a few people view it as a form of rebellion. There are also those people who take it to the extreme: one woman having over 400 piercings on her body.
