About This Quiz

Macho guns. Extreme chase scenes. Spectacular crashes. And we haven’t even mentioned the awesome acting from Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. That must be why this action/comedy was, financially speaking, the number one movie of 1984.
Where was Axel a cop before he came to Beverly Hills?
Detroit
Axel came to Beverly Hills “on vacation” from Detroit where his childhood buddy, Mikey, was killed while visiting him from Beverly Hills. He is looking into his friend's murder. When the film came out, the school received orders for the shirts from customers all over the world.

The first chase scene was insane with a two-ton extended semi-truck. What was inside?

The "cigarette spill-over" crash sequence was filmed on John R and Brush Streets in the Highland Park district, the smashed fruit truck scene was located at Michigan Avenue and 30th Street, and the two-ton truck collision was shot several blocks away, on Jackson Avenue and 30th Street. Where were the Detroit scenes shot?
Montreal
Chicago
At a Burbank Studio
Detroit
Most of the scenes set in Detroit were actually shot there. Detroit PD was more helpful when producers were researching police procedures. A detective even took them to a murder site.

Who played Billy Rosewood?
A. Judge Reinhold
Reinhold has appeared in more than 60 films including Ruthless People, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins and The Santa Clause trilogy. In the process of casting the characters of Rosewood and Taggart, the director paired up various finalists and asked them to do some improvisation to get a feel for the chemistry between the actors. He paired up Judge Reinhold and John Ashton and gave them the following direction: "You are a middle aged couple, married for years. You are having a conversation on an average evening." Judge Reinhold immediately picked up a nearby magazine and the two improvised the "5 pounds of red meat in his bowels" bit almost verbatim as it eventually appeared in the movie. This got them the parts.

Bronson Pinchot
You may recognize Bronson Pinchot from Perfect Strangers, Risky Business, True Romance, Beverly Hills Cop III, It's My Party, Courage Under Fire, and The First Wives Club, and many other movies. Originally, two men were supposed to be working in the art gallery scenes. When the director heard Bronson Pinchot's Serge impersonation, however, he thought it was so hysterical he scaled back the other part to give Pinchot more screen time. The second actor shows up only briefly with his shirt collar open too wide, on which Serge comments.

Axel
After Axel Foley gets thrown out of the window and arrested, he arrives at Beverly Hills City Hall. The city hall building seen in the film is the actual Beverly Hills City Hall. However, the exterior was very run-down and the plants were dying, so the film crew had to clean it up and grow new plants so it would look better on film.

Who said this? “You know this is the cleanest, nicest police car I’ve ever been in, in my life. This thing is nicer than my apartment.”
Axel
Posing as a flower deliveryman, Axel goes to Maitland's office and tries to question him about Mikey, his childhood friend who was murdered when visiting Axel from Beverly Hills. Unfortunately, Axel is thrown through a window by Maitland's bodyguards and arrested. That’s when he comments on how nice the police car is. The shooting script was literally pasted together from the half dozen or so scripts written for this project over the years. A. Axel proved what an outstanding cop he is
At the strip club Axel foils a robbery with the help of Taggart and Billy. This crisis changed the dynamic and the three develop a mutual respect for each other. The song which plays during the strip club scene is "Nasty Girl", by Vanity, and was recommended by the real-life stripper who was hired for the scene. One of the best scenes is the Super Cops dialog. What did he say that Billy Rosewood and John Taggart should wear?
Disguises
Capes
A cape of course, however you would never know that by reading the script. When filming the scenes in the police station sequences, Eddie Murphy became very tired. The crew offered him coffee but he refused to drink any because he refuses to take drugs of any kind. Eventually, Murphy relented and took small sips of coffee to stay awake. As a result of his first caffeine intake, Murphy became very energized and ad-libbed the "super-cops" monologue.

Who said this? “Before I go, I just want you two to know something, alright? The supercop story... was working. Okay? It was working, and you guys just messed it up. Okay? I'm trying to figure you guys out, but I haven't yet. But it's cool. You fuck up a perfectly good lie.”
Serge
Axel
Eddie Murphy improvised the entire Super Cop monologue. Can you imagine Eddie Murphy NOT playing Axel Foley? Originally, Axel Foley was going to be played by Sylvester Stallone or Mickey Rourke. Stallone rewrote the script, but left the project when his ideas were deemed to expensive by the studio. He used some of his script ideas to make Cobra. Other actors who were considered for the role of Axel Foley were Harrison Ford, Michael Keaton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Richard Pryor and James Caan.

Why did the script have to be so hastily written?
Two weeks prior the lead was going to be Sylvester Stallone
Mickey Rourke was a hot commodity, fresh off his Diner performance as Boogie. Rourke made $400,000 by signing a holding contract, going back and forth with the studio and the writers on ideas for the script, and then walking away when his contract expired to look for work elsewhere. Then Sylvestor Stallone was to be the lead and Stallone did his own rewrite so it would be a pure action movie. Two weeks before filming was to start, Stallone was suddenly out and Eddie Murphy was in, prompting massive rewrites and the need for many improvised scenes.
There were so many rewrites no one knew which one was final
Two weeks prior Mickey Roarke was going to be the lead

Did Eddie Murphy do any of his own stunts?
Yes, he’s was in great shape and could do it
No, he’s an actor, not a stunt man
Some he did, and some a stunt man did
Murphy did many of the stunts needed during this sequence, and these shots were filmed in downtown L.A., not Detroit. The shot of Axel Foley flying out the back and hitting the side of the truck was obviously a stuntman, one who didn’t want to get back in the truck after. An interesting modification was that the truck used during the opening chase had its front bumper replaced with a steel I-beam so it could plow through anything it came into contact with. The crew referred to the truck on set as “The Train”.

Who is the director of Beverly Hills Cop?
A. Martin Brest
When Stallone was still signed up to play the lead, Scorcese was offered the director's chair but did not take the offer. Simpson took the hint, but Bruckheimer kept trying, and to end the harassment, Brest decided to flip a coin to make his decision. The coin told him to take the job. As the movie proved to be an enormous hit, he framed the quarter and hung it upon his wall.

A man waving his hands enthusiastically on a Detroit street
Two men in leather outfits walking on a Beverly Hills street
A girl with braces trying to trip Axel on a Beverly Hills street
A & B
During the opening montage, a man can be seen waving his arms around enthusiastically as he speaks to a couple men. As stated in the filmmaker commentary, the man is actually miming out the bus spin from the truck chase. The shot of Axel walking down the street and passing the two guys dressed in leather outfits (and Axel starts laughing) was shot during a lunch break in a particularly crummy part of Los Angeles. Expensive cars and greenery were added in to make it appear to be Beverly Hills.

How did Beverly Hills Cop do in the box office?
Ok, but did better in video sales
Not good. But now it is a cult classic
Fantastically, it one of the highest grossing R-rated films
Beverly Hills Cop was the highest grossing R-rated film in the US until The Matrix Reloaded (2003) eclipsed it 19 years later. If inflation were taken into account it would rank as the third most attended R-rated film after The Exorcist (1973) and The Godfather (1972).

Beverly Hills Cop lived on in sequels. How did the sequels do?
Not as profitable as the original
Beverly Hills Cop II was released in 1987 to mixed reviews but still made over $135 million, and the third movie only made $42 million in the United States. An updated TV series was pitched to CBS in 2013, but despite Eddie Murphy's participation, the network passed after seeing the pilot. All is not lost, because a primarily Detroit-based Beverly Hills Cop IV is due to arrive in March 2016, with Murphy reprising his role as Axel.
Both sequels were more profitable than the original
Only Beverly Hill Cop 3 was the most profitable
