Earth is overpopulated and polluted. Most of the earth's citizens live in poverty, on the edge of starvation, and with little technology and medical care. It is the year 2154 -- Elysium sits in the Earth’s orbit so that those on Elysium can still run businesses and build industries that pollute the earth, while living a healthy, pollution-free life in Elysium.
Why is there a business for Spider, the human smuggler?
A long-running feud exists between the wealthy residents of Elysium and the citizens of Earth, who want Elysian technology to cure their medical ailments. But just being smuggled into Elysium is not enough. You need a bar code emblazoned on your arm to identify you as an Elysian citizen. Once there, you need to break into a house and use the Med-Bay before being caught by Elysian security and deported. Because the need is so large, big money can be made by people like Spider, a human smuggler.
What exactly does Spider do?
Spider has the technicians, pilots, fuel, computers, codes, everything he needs to smuggle people into Elysium. Spider is portrayed by Wagner Moura, a Brazilian film, television, and stage actor. He achieved international fame for his portrayal of Captain Roberto Nascimento in the Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. He played the lead role of Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
Where does Max live as an adult?
Max Da Costa lives in the ruins of Los Angeles. He works at an assembly line for Armadyne Corp, a company run by CEO John Carlyle. The film's Earth-bound scenes were shot in a dump in the poor Iztapalapa district on the outskirts of Mexico City. The crew shot for two weeks in a dump, which Damon has said were the toughest two weeks of his career, because the dust kicked up by the production wasn't dust -- it was fecal matter. According to the LA Times, conditions were so toxic that at one point the production crew had to scrape off the top layer of silt and replace it with prop garbage, and the crew had to pass through a clean zone before lunch.

It was a gory scene as they drilled into Max’s bones to attach the exo-skeleton. The room was dirty, disgusting and not sterile. Plus, you could see how old and low-tech his suit is, compared to his nemesis, Kruger. To prepare for the role, Matt Damon had a daily four-hour workout in the gym. Neill Blomkamp was specific of the character's physical look - he had a mugshot of Damon tacked on to the body of a model on the poster as a reference for the trainer.

What incurable disease does Matilda, Frey’s daughter, have?
Matilda has stage four leukemia. Leukemia is cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Leukemia usually involves the white blood cells. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, hindering the body's ability to fight infection. They can’t save her on Earth, but they can on Elysium.
What is so powerful about the information that Max has downloaded into his brain?
Defense Secretary Delacourt wants the information and Kruger wants it to rule Elysium. Spider and Max want it to change the status of all Earth citizens from illegal to legal citizens of Elysium. Delacourt is played by Jodie Foster, who has often been cited as one of the best actresses of her generation. She was a child and teen actress, receiving an Academy Award nomination for her role in Taxi Driver. She also starred in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs.

How does Max get the advantage over Kruger?
Max manages to rip out Kruger's neural implant, rendering his suit immobile. However, Kruger is a psychopath and he tethers himself to Max's suit, then pulls the pin on a grenade with the intent of killing them both. Max rips off the tether and hurls Kruger over a ledge to his death. Commenting on the exo-skeleton, Matt Damon told the Huffington Post that "They did a really good job. By the time I got it, they got it down to 25 pounds. [It was] distributed over my whole body, so it really wasn't bad." According to press notes for the film, the HULC suit required eight months of research and development and 75 revisions just to finalize the design.
What happens when Spider starts downloading Max’s data into Elysium’s computer core?
Spider and Max reach Elysium's computer core, where Spider realizes that the program's activation will kill Max. As Max dies, Elysium's computer core reboots and registers every Earth resident as an Elysian citizen. What is interesting is that before writer/director Blomkamp started shooting—or casting—he created a graphic novel as a reference. “It absolutely blew my mind," Damon told Wired. The book featured not only detailed illustrations of the film's universe and its weapons and technology, but also how Blomkamp wanted Max to look.
