Don't sleep on the Coast Guard. It is a part of the Department of Homeland Defense, but still is classified as part of the military, because if a war goes down, the President can have the Coast Guard at his disposal. But what makes the Coast Guard so darn cool is that defending our coast from potential invaders from other lands is just part of what it does. 

The Coast Guard is mostly known for is search and rescue. In other words, if a ship or a person is lost at sea or in distress, the Coast Guard is who is going to come to help them out. It also is used as a sort of law enforcement operation at sea, looking out for drug dealers trying to bring in their product by boat, as well as working to stop illegal immigration.
