Everyone knows DKNY, but do you know what it stands for? Donna Karan New York of course! Donna Karan, who worked at Anne Klein for 15 years, founded her own company in 1984 with the help of husband, Stephan Weiss.

Giorgio Armani formed Armani in 1975. His clothes are known for their clean, tailored lines. He has been acclaimed as the most successful designer of Italian origin and is worth more than $8 BILLION!

Calvin Klein not only designs clothes, but also perfumes, watches and jewelry. He was born on November 19, 1942, and started his company in 1968.

Versace was founded in 1978 by Gianni Versace. The company employs more than 1,500 people and its headquarter is located in Milan, Italy.

Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in 1939 in The Bronx, New York. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked briefly for Brooks Brothers and by 1967, had started his own company, Ralph Lauren Corporation, designing men's ties.

Christian Dior was nominated for the 1955 Academy Award for Best Costume Design in black and white for the film, "Terminal Station." He was also nominated in 1967 for a BAFTA for Best British Costume for "Arabesque."

Yves Saint-Laurent was born Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent in 1936. He is regarded as being one of the best fashion designers in the twentieth century. He died of brain cancer in 2008.

Born in Florence, Italy, Guccio Gucci is the man behind the fashion house known as Gucci. He founded the company in 1921 as a small family-owned leather saddlery shop.

French designer Pierre Cardin was actually born in Italy. He founded his company in 1950 and is famous for introducing the "bubble dress" in 1954.

Christian Louboutin, the king of high-end stilleto shoes with shiney, red-lacquered soles. To own a pair of his shoes is to be and feel very fancy.

Chloé was founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, and later Jacques Lenoir. Chloé has been worn by many celebrities, including Marion Cotillard, Sienna Miller, Madonna, January Jones, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone, Clémence Poésy and Katie Holmes.

Did you know that Tommy Hilfiger spent the summer of 1969 working in a clothing store on Cape Cod in Massachusetts? He later decided to use his life savings of $150 to open a clothing store with two friends. In 1985, he founded Tommy Hilfiger Corporation.

Jean-Paul Gaultier never received any formal training as a designer. He began his career by sending sketches to famous coture stylists at an early age and impressed none other than Pierre Cardin! Cardin hired Gaultier as an assistant in 1970. The rest, as they say, is history.

Katherine Noel Brosnahan was born on December 24, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of Arizona State University from which she received her degree in 1985.

Born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin, Diane von Furstenberg married Prince Egon von Furstenberg in 1969. She held the title of princess until their divorce in 1972. She is best known for her iconic wrap dress designs.

Michael Kors was born Karl Anderson Jr. on August 9, 1959. Today he is worth $1 billion. He has won numerous fashion awards, including the 1999 CFDA award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, as well as the 2003 CFDA award for Menswear Designer of the Year.

Tory Burch, born Tory Robinson, is the Chairman, CEO, and Designer of Tory Burch LLC. In 2015, she was listed as the 73rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo, aka Oscar de la Renta, was a Dominican-American fashion designer. He was born in Santo Domingo and was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo. He died in 2014 at the age of 82.

Givenchy was founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952. The current artistic director of the fashion brand is Clare Waight Keller.

Vera Wang was hired to be an editor at Vogue Magazine immediately upon graduation from Sarah Lawrence College. She stayed there for 17 years, followed by a short stint at Ralph Lauren. She resigned at the age of 40 and has been making bridal gowns ever since.

Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer whose greatest rival was Coco Chanel. Despite having clients such as Daisy Fellowes and Mae West, Schiaparelli did not change with the times and for this, she suffered. Her couture house closed in 1954.

Don Emilio Pucci, Marchese di Barsento, was an Italian fashion designer and politician. His work was known to be synonymous with geometric prints in a kaleidoscope of colors.
