They include the makers of the soda which is now an official drink in Maine and the company which makes the Devil Dog Cake. Do you know which two we're thinking of? Food brands along the East Coast range from snack makers to bakeries to breweries. Of course, dairy products like yummy yogurt and delicious ice cream are also a big part of it all. Utz began in 1921 as “Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips” in Hanover, Pensylvania. It has since grown to become America’s largest independent, privately held snack brand. Among the company’s current offerings of over 390 different snacks are potato chips, pretzels, pork rinds, and tortilla chips.

The Tasty Baking Company located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania began making Tastykakes in 1914. According to the company’s website, 8 million peanut butter sandwiches could be made from the peanut butter it puts into its Kandy Kakes each year.

NECCO (New England Confectionery Company) has been making their 4-in-1 Sky Bar since 1938. In 2009, NECCO partnered with the popular "Twilight" film franchise and sold Sky Bar in special packaging which featured characters from the films, as well as limited-edition flavors chosen to match the films’ themes.

Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods has been around since 1947 when it was founded in Scarborough, Maine under the name Humpty Dumpty Potato Chip Company, Inc. Along with a variety of potato chips, the company’s lineup also features corn chips and potato sticks, among others.

Drake’s Cakes started out in Harlem, New York in 1896 under the name N.E. Drake Baking Company. Their specialty at the time was pound cake in a variety of flavors and it wasn’t until 1926 that their iconic Drake’s Devil Dog Cake was introduced. Their other well-known products include Ring Dings and Yodels, introduced in 1958 and 1962, respectively.

Rita’s Italian Ice restaurant chain sells a wide assortment of frozen novelties. Along with traditional favorites like Italian ice, gelati, sundaes, and frozen custard, the company also sells its own creations, including the Blendini, which it describes as “mixed-up magic”: Italian ice, frozen custard and your choice of toppings all mixed together!

Fiery red Ah-So Sauce with its smoky and garlicky flavor has been a staple in East Coast cuisine for decades. Ah-So falls under the umbrella of American-style Chinese sauces, but its name is taken from a Japanese phrase.

Moxie carbonated beverages got their start as far back as 1876 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Back then, Dr. Augustin Thompson sold his un-carbonated Moxie Nerve Food as a supposed “cure all” to work against a variety of ailments. Fast forward nearly 150 years and Moxie Soda is now so popular on the East Coast that it has been named the official soda of the state of Maine.

The very first Dunkin’ Donuts shop opened in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950. Within five years, the company became a franchise, and today it is one of the largest operations of its kind in the world. Dunkin’ Donuts can be found in over 30 countries, serving over 50 different types of donuts to more than 3 million customers daily.

Richard Hellman opened his Hellman Delicatessen in Manhattan, New York in 1913 and began making his soon-to-famous mayonnaise. West Coast-based Best Foods bought the Hellman's brand in 1927. Since then, the company has maintained both names with each brand remaining popular in its respective region.

In 1940, with the help of relatives, Dean and Betty Arnold began their bread baking business out of their own home in Armonk, New York. Within a year, the business experienced so much growth that the couple expanded their bakery to larger facilities in Port Chester, New York. They followed that up with even larger operations in Rivera Beach, Florida, and Greenwich, Connecticut.

Harpoon India Pale Ale (IPA) may be its most popular brew, but Harpoon Brewery produces several other year-round, seasonal and one-of-a-kind beers. The company was started in 1986 by a trio of beer-lovers in Boston, Massachusetts. Both that brewery and the company’s newer brewery in Windsor, Vermont are open to tours by the public.

The recipe for Necco Wafers originated in 1847 with NECCO co-founder Oliver Chase. The wafers, which were originally called “hub wafers,” were the first of their kind and were produced on a lozenge cutter machine invented by Chase.

The first Wawa store opened in Folsom, Pennsylvania in 1964 and by 1972, the company was celebrating the opening of its 100th store. In 1992, the chain opened store number 500, and by its 50th anniversary in 2014, Wawa had almost 750 locations along the East Coast.

Abbott’s Frozen Custard traces its beginnings to 1902 when founder Arthur Abbott began perfecting his frozen custard recipe. He opened his first shop in Rochester, New York in 1926 and although the company now has over 40 locations, that original shop is still open, and business is booming!

D. G. Yuengling & Son started operations as Eagle Brewery in 1829. Today it is one of the largest and oldest breweries in the U.S. Its Lord Chester Ale and Porter were both introduced in 1829, and both are still being brewed and sold by the company, today.

Polar Beverages, which specializes in seltzers and sodas, has been a family-owned company since its inception in 1882. Dennis Crowley created the very first Polar Seltzer in Worcester, Massachusetts. His descendants have grown the business to now include over 18 seltzer drinks in addition to other popular beverages, some of which they release in Limited Edition batches twice a year.

Shake Shack began operation in 2001 as a single hot dog cart in Madison Square Park. Today it is an international restaurant chain and the menu options which East Coasters have fallen in love with since Shake Shack’s inception are now available at over 160 locations around the world.

Hood Eggnog is just one in a line of well-liked milk-based products made by the HP Hood company. The company now has 13 manufacturing plants nationwide but traces its roots to Charlestown, Massachusetts where it was started by Harvey Perley Hood in 1846.

Romanian immigrant David Goldenberg founded the Goldenberg Candy Company in 1890. By 1917, he had developed and was producing Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews to rave reviews. The company is now owned by Just Born, Inc. which also makes Peeps marshmallow candies, Mike and Ike fruit-flavored candies, and Teenee Beanee gourmet jelly beans.

Cook Out was founded in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1989 by Morris Reaves. There are now over 230 Cook Out locations boasting a menu which includes over 40 flavors of premium milkshakes.

The Western U.S. may know it as Dreyer’s, but on the East Coast, this near 100-year-old company goes by the name Edy’s. The names come from the company’s founders Joseph Edy and William Dreyer, a candy maker, and an ice cream maker, respectively. Together, they are credited as the creators of Rocky Road ice cream.

White Castle may have had its start in the Midwestern state of Kansas, but since its first opening in 1921, the company has spread its wings to become a notable restaurant chain in the Mid-Atlantic, as well. The company still serves its iconic, original, small square Sliders from its over 400 locations nationwide.

This Virginia-based company started “chipping” back in 1992. Route 11 Potato Chips welcomes chip-lovers for “Fry Viewing” to see how they create their many potato chips flavor at their manufacturing plant.

From its beginnings in 1919, Cabot was owned by farm families – 94 farmers in Vermont initially and now approximately 1,000 from all over New England. Their many flavors of cheeses are sold as bars, spreads, slices and snack packs. Apart from its famous Cabot Cheeses, the company also offers yogurts, dips, creams, cottage cheese, butter and whey protein.

Cape Cod Potato Chips have been in operation since July 4, 1980, when a pair of entrepreneurs set up their chip business in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The secret behind the crunchiness that keeps customers coming back for more is that Cape Cod kettle fries its chips in small batches.

The Hershey Company can easily boast that it is one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate products in the world. The company was started in 1905 by Milton S. Hershey in a town that now bears his name: Hershey, Pennsylvania.

McCormick & Company is currently a huge, award-winning global entity but the company had very humble beginnings. In 1889, in a Baltimore cellar, Willoughby M. McCormick and a handful of workers started producing spices and flavors which they sold door-to-door. Among the many awards the company has won, are several for being one of the best places to work.

Stewart’s Shops got its start from as far back as 1917 when the Dake brothers (Charles and Percy) of New York decided to enter the dairy business. By 1960 the company was being run by the brothers with help from Charles’ two sons (Charles and William). As of 2003, the company is led by William and his son, Gary.

The business which grew into the Campbell Soup Company (Campbell's) was started in New Jersey in 1869 by Joseph Campbell, a fruit merchant, and Abraham Anderson, an icebox manufacturer. Campbell’s ready-to-eat soup first hit the market in 1895, and two years later its condensed soups (including the still popular tomato soup) began gracing supermarket shelves.

The Hoodsie Cup by the HP Hood company of Lynnfield, Massachusetts is a classic snack that has retained its appeal for decades. This small cardboard cup with its chocolate and vanilla ice cream swirls and flat wooden spoon has played a part in many happy New England childhoods since 1947.

Cisco Brewers has the distinction of being the only brewer on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Cisco and its associated companies, Nantucket Vineyards and Triple Eight Distillery, produce a variety of beers, wines, and spirits.

The Wachusett Potato Chip Company began operations in 1939 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The company grew to produce a wide variety of flavors of potato chips, as well as popcorn and cheese curls. Wachusett became a part of the Utz Quality Foods family in 2011.

B&M is known throughout New England for its oven baked beans and canned brown bread. The company got its start in Portland, Maine in 1867 with founders George Burnham and Charles S. Morrill. Its first products included canned meats, seafood, and corn but the real hit came in 1927 when the company introduced its baked beans which go so well with slices of their brown bread in a can!

Del’s Lemonade had its humble beginnings in 1948 as a little frozen lemonade stand in Cranston, Rhode Island. Since then, the DeLucia family has built it into a flourishing East Coast business selling refreshing fruit-flavored thirst quenchers and shandies.

Old Bay Seasoning’s bold and unique flavors have endured since the company was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1939. What has changed, however, is the name – the company used to go by “Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning” but dropped that long-winded name in favor of its now iconic moniker.

The global success story that is H. J. Heinz Company began in 1869 with German-American entrepreneur Henry John Heinz. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and now a part of Kraft Heinz, the company makes and sells thousands of products around the world. It is still, however, very much identified with one of its very first products – tomato ketchup!

The Maine-based J.J. Nissen bakery is credited with having invented the classic top-cut New England hot dog bun at some point in the 1940s. The company is also well-known for its other baked goods and continues to thrive as a part of the Bimbo Bakeries USA group.

Magic Hat Brewery has been brewing up a storm in Vermont since 1994 (first in Burlington and then in South Burlington). They produce five year-round beers plus several seasonal and one-time-only brews.

Ben & Jerry’s long-running popularity is definitely based on its great-tasting ice cream, but we’re pretty sure it gets a boost from the annual Free Cone Day. The founders, Ben and Jerry, started Free Cone Day in 1979 at their very first ice cream shop (a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont). Treating their customers was their way to celebrate the company’s first anniversary.
